  20. I Overview
  21. ----------- 
  22. Runes are a method of divination similar to the Tarot
  23. or the I Ching.  The difference is that Runes are a set
  24. of 25 stones instead of 78 cards or a set of sticks
  25. with patterns.  As with the Tarot, most of the Runes
  26. may be rightside up, or up side down, the meaning
  27. differing with the case.  There are also some Runes
  28. that can not appear up side down.  In practice, the
  29. Runes may be made of any material; ceramic, stones,
  30. sticks, or drawn on cards.66
  31.  
  32. II. History
  33. -----------
  34. Before the Germanic peoples of ancient Western Europe
  35. possessed a true alphabet, they used pictorial symbols
  36. to carve into stones their ideas and thoughts.  The
  37. earliest of these pictorial writings date from about
  38. 1300 BC. They were probably linked to Sun and Fertility
  39. cults.  Among the signs were parts of the human body,
  40. weapons, animals and variations on the circle, square,
  41. and swastika.  These pictoglyphs later evolved into the
  42. more abstract glyphs that were composed of lines
  43. resembling no particular objects.  That there was power
  44. endowed to those who were adept at the use of these
  45. glyphs is indicated by the name given to the glyphs
  46. themselves.  These glyphs were called Runes, from the
  47. Gothic Runa, meaning 'a secret thing, a mystery.'  The
  48. Runic letter or Runastafr was use to foretell the
  49. future by Runemal, or the casting of the Runes.  The
  50. Runes were inscribed into tools, weapons, rocks,
  51. alters, and other personal items.  Runes were also used
  52. by the clergy as an alternative to the Latin alphabet.
  53. It is believed that Runes were derived from a northern
  54. Etruscan alphabet used among Italic tribes in the
  55. Eastern Alps.  They may have been developed by people
  56. living in the area of Bohemia.  From the beginning
  57. Runes were used for the casting of lots, for divination
  58. and to evoke higher powers that might influence the
  59. 'luck' of man. There were Runes that influenced the
  60. weather, the harvest, curses, the tides, love, and
  61. healing.  The Practicianer of Runemal was easily
  62. recognizable by the very clothing they wore.  As the
  63. 13th century author of the 'Saga of Erik the Red' said,
  64. "She wore a cloak set with stones along the hem.
  65. Around her neck and covering her head she wore a hood
  66. lined with white catskins.  In one hand she carried a
  67. staff with a knob on the end and her belt, holding
  68. together her long dress, hung a charm pouch."  As you
  69. can also see from this passage, many of the Rune
  70. Masters were women.  As time wore on, the Runes
  71. themselves became standardized through out Europe.
  72. Although in some places the Runes numbered as many as
  73. 36 or as few as 16.  Twenty-four of these were the
  74. basic Runes, or futhark.  The name futhark comes from
  75. the first 6 Runes.  There were 3 families of 8 Runes
  76. each, named after the Norse Gods Freyr, Hagal and Tyr.
  77. These three aettir, as they were called were:

  79. Freyr's Eight: Fehu, Uruz, Thurisaz, Ansuz, Raido,
  80.            Kano, Gebo, Wunjo 
  81. Hagal's Eight: Hagalaz, Nauthiz, Isa, Jera,
  82.            Eihwaz, Perth, Algiz, Sowelu 
  83. Tyr's Eight:   Teiwaz, Berkana, Ehwaz,
  84.              Mannaz, Laguz, Inguz, Othila, Dagaz.

  86. The Anglo-Saxons are credited with spreading Runes and
  87. Runecraft through out Europe.  It is unfortunate that
  88. more than 300 years ago the last of the Rune Masters
  89. died taking with them the true art of Rune casting. In
  90. recent years people such as Ralph Blum have tired to
  91. revive the ancient art of Rune Casting through books,
  92. casting Runes, and through research into ancient books
  93. and manuscripts for references to Runes.

  95. III Descriptions and Meanings

  97. A. Mannaz: Two vertical lines with a horizontal 'X'
  98. connecting the top of the two lines so that it appears
  99. like a golf flag and its mirror image.

  104. Normal: Essence is water.  Clarity, willingness to
  105. change is effective now.  Become right with yourself,
  106. then you can be right with others.  Be yielding,
  107. devoted and moderate.  Only then will you have a true
  108. direction.
  109. Inverted: If there is blockage now, it comes from
  110. within.  Look to yourself, not to others at this time.
  111. Stop and reconsider.  The outer enemy is but a
  112. reflection of yourself.

  114. B. Gebo:  An 'X'.

  120. Normal: A union is at hand. However, do not make this a
  121. total union, keep yourself.  Let the winds of Heaven
  122. blow between you and your partner.
  123. Inverted: This rune is impossible to invert due to its
  124. symmetry

  126. C. Ansuz:  An 'F' with the arms pointing downward.

  132. Normal: There is a new life unfolding.  Be aware during
  133. meetings with others.  A connection with the Divine may
  134. be at hand.  Draw from the well for yourself first,
  135. then you will have the strength to draw from the well
  136. for others.
  137. Inverted: Failed communication may seem to be a block.
  138. Remember, what happens now is timely to your
  139. development.  If the well is clogged, then clean it
  140. out.
  141.  
  142. D.  Othila: A diamond shape with the two lower sides
  143. extended beyond the point at which they meet to form
  144. legs.

  150. Normal: A shedding of old skins is called for.  You may
  151. receive benefits, but it may require you to give up
  152. something else.  This may be difficult to do because
  153. part of what you may have to give up is a portion of
  154. your background.
  155. Inverted: Do not be bound by old conditionings.  You
  156. may be called upon to take a radical departure from old
  157. ways.  Be totally honest with yourself now.  Flow is
  158. the proper attitude at this time.
  159.  
  160. E.  Uruz: A tall vertical line on the left, a shorter
  161. vertical line on the right, connected on top by
  162. diagonal line.  Similar to a 'squared' small letter
  163. 'n'.

  169. Normal: The life you have been living is at an end.
  170. However, this is not a Rune of ending, it is instead a
  171. Rune of new beginnings.  There may be darkness of a
  172. tunnel leading to the new life, but the light will
  173. bebrighter at the end.  Prepare for the opportunity
  174. disguised as a loss.
  175. Inverted: You may fail to take dvantage of the moment.
  176. It is possible that your strength may seem to be used
  177. against you.  The seeming failure may come as a minor
  178. or major jolt depending on your awareness.  Remember,
  179. life is a cycle and you will again reach this point to
  180. again have this choice.
  181.  
  182. F.  Perth: A vertical line on the left with an
  183. elongated 'v' connected to the top from the right, and
  184. an elongated inverted 'V' connected to the bottom from
  185. the right.

  191. Normal: Inner changes are taking place.  Surprises may
  192. be in store.  Nothing external matters here, except as
  193. it shows you your inner self.
  194. Inverted: Do not expect too much now.  If you repeat
  195. the old, expect to suffer.  Do not focus on the past or
  196. you will neglect the true now.  You may have 'bad luck'
  197. or recognize a specific block, or challenge.  It
  198. depends on your point of view.

  200. G.  Nauthiz: A vertical line with a diagonal line
  201. crossing it.  The diagonal line runs from the upper
  202. left to the lower right.

  208. Normal: There is a definite need for restraint.  There
  209. will be holdups, and the need to reconsider your plans
  210. carefully.  If you can not restore harmony at this
  211. time, restore balance at least.  consider the uses of
  212. adversity.
  213. Inverted: Here is the great teacher disguised as the
  214. bringer of pain and limitation.  Only at the darkest
  215. hour do we see just how bright the light is within
  216. ourselves.  Cleansing is needed to strengthen the
  217. character.  Only after great darkness will we know and
  218. see the true light.

  220. H. Inguz: Two 'X's stacked on top of each other and
  221. touching.

  227. Normal: Now is the time of great strength when
  228. completions can be finished and as a result new
  229. beginnings started.  Difficulties can be resolved and
  230. clarified.  The butterfly now emerges from the cocoon.
  231. Movement may cause you to free yourself from a rut in
  232. your life.  There is danger, but like the King on a
  233. chess board, the movement takes you
